A Retirement from Work, Not from Independence

Take a ride on T.H.E. Bus

After an incredible 54 years at Riverview Hospital, Carol Abeld has officially retired — marking the end of a remarkable career of service to her community.

For the past 12 years, Carol has also been a familiar face on T.H.E. Bus, riding daily to and from work. She began using the service because she doesn’t drive and needed a reliable way to get to her job. Before moving, she either walked or caught a ride with her husband. The bus provided the dependable transportation she needed to continue doing the work she loved.

Carol shares that the drivers are always friendly and easy to talk to. She especially appreciates their thoughtfulness in pulling up close to help her avoid the ice at the end of the road. She also gives a special shout-out to the dispatchers, who are wonderful to work with and consistently call back with confirmations when she leaves a message in the morning.

Although she’s retiring from the hospital, Carol isn’t retiring from riding. She plans to continue using the bus to stay independent — whether she’s heading to the store or making a trip to Grand Forks. We’re honored to have been part of her journey and look forward to many more rides ahead.
